Modern Minimalist Teen Bedroom Makeover
My 17 year old wanted a room that was “her vibe”. She told us she wanted Shiplap. Easy. Done. She said she wanted the farmhouse/craftsman style trim that we have in the kitchen. Easy. Done.
So, once all of that was done, including the popcorn ceilings scraped and skim coated for a smooth look, everything primed and painted (I’ll share in another post soon), it was time to decorate. Eeeeeekkkkkk this was actually the hard part. I knew what I would’ve done, but This. Is. Her. Room. And I wanted it to be HER choice. We finally realized a lot of what she DIDN’T like. So we did that thing they taught you in elementary school to do on standardized tests- deductive reasoning. Then we did that thing they taught you on the Internet- search Pinterest.
We knew we wanted a minimalistic platform/ floating bed and we wanted it in a wood tone. We found this one at IKEA. It’s streamlined, with just enough storage and she loved how it goes to the floor, so nothing can sneakily slip under there.
Beddys is always a must have with… well, anyone. But especially kids and especially teens with platform beds. She’s a bed maker, so this was a no brainer! Easy peasy. Soft, convenient, genius. All the things.
She let me know she wanted color and knew the color scheme, but this actually took awhile to find. Finally, we found these affordable clay colored blanket and pillow cases. And let’s not forget this leather looking lumbar that my son calls a Twix bar! I have literally used this to stage 3 beds now. I need to invest in more because now that I’m writing this out… I’m pretty sure they would look wicked in my living room, too…
The ceiling fan was actually the first thing I picked out for this room. I googled what she said she wanted — “white, gold, modern ceiling fan”,
and this is what popped up. Sold. She wanted one she could control from the wall not a remote, so this was gold (literally!).
ANYWAY, back on track. We also found our favorite storage solution at IKEA (we have them all over the house)- the Kallax shelving unit. My daughter decided she wanted white to contrast with the wood, then picked out what elements she wanted and voila! I love that mix and match feature.
This round, gold shelf was a Christmas present to her years ago, but it fit her modern style so well still and provided a fun visual as well as storage.
Next, we found this great sized, neutral futon. It fit perfectly in the space, but serves as a place for her to do her homeschool lessons, have friends or siblings hang out, and have sleepovers since it folds down to a bed!
The wall treatment is actually two macrame pieces we put together and hung on a branch found in the woods. Ha! It would’ve been cute if we had just strung ropes on a branch, too.
My girl is an avid reader, so a bookcase was high priority. I’m sure you have all seen the Billy bookcase and all its hacks all over the internet- but we came up with our own. Wait for it…. Just add books 😆
These cutie wood honeycomb shelves were a find at Dollar General, and the plant hangers are all from Five and Below, but I’m going to share some dupes.
Finding the perfect rug was the big hold up. We had this room completed for weeks before I shared the reveal because I couldn’t find anything she liked and these colors make it harder. But I finally found it- The Rosman! And it arrived in 2 days. Talk about quick delivery!
That’s all of the room tour, for now. There is an entire mini office in one of those closets, but I’ll share that in another post. I hope you got some ideas!
